Job Title: OSP Drop Technician

Classification:  Non-Exempt, Hourly

ABOUT THE COMPANY

Joink, LLC was founded as an Internet Service Provider, providing dial-up, DSL and fixed wireless broadband Internet services.  Today, the company provides connectivity for customers who span the landscape from residential to enterprise using technologies that include leased lines, unlicensed wireless, licensed wireless, and fiber optics.  Also, the company provides managed hosting services including virtual machine, web/email, and offsite backup storage.  And finally, the Company’s technology services group leverages its enterprise knowledge of networking, software, storage, and telephony technologies to provide design, installation, and continued supported around key technologies from companies such as VMware, Cisco UCS, IBM, Veeam and Microsoft.

POSITION SUMMARY

This Technician will work with the team to bring internet to the customer through fiber optic cable to homes and businesses. They will work alongside various members of the Joink Team to execute plans expanding the main fiber network and bringing fiber into homes. They will operate machinery of various kinds, which may include but is not limited to remote plows, Hydro Vacuum Excavators, and Mini Excavators.

  • No direct reports
  • May lead, train, or participate in work team assignments.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Performs in accordance with Joink and industry safety and quality standards.
  2. Coordinates work with OSP Drop Lead, follows construction paths, identifies utility crossings (both marked and unmarked), and buries fiber optic lines, communicating with the customers and other contractors as needed.
  3. Operates all equipment safely, performing required maintenance.
  4. Executes assigned tasks in a timely and efficient manner to ensure productivity of team.
  5. Routinely cuts concrete, asphalt, brick, and other hard surfaces and removing them.
  6. Accurately measures depth and clearly marks such depths onsite using white flags in green belt or paint on hard surfaces as well as marking such depths on paper plans.
  7. Performs restoration to minimize the visible impact that Joink leaves on site.
  8. Identifies unsafe conditions and bring it to the attention of the Lead and/or Supervisor.
  9. Participates in additional training to advance skills.
  10. Maintains tools/inventory and vehicle, following all relevant procedures.
  11. May utilize business software to upload photos/update tickets pre and post-dig with time completed.
  12. Driving duties include conveying materials, equipment, and staff to and from work sites and ability to meet necessary FMCSA requirements (includes passing the DOT physical).

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Ability to maintain a professional demeanor.
  • Ability to evaluate situations and adjust to changing priorities.
  • Understanding of when to use hand tools or power tools (ex: when to use a shovel or post-hole digger and when to use a mini excavator).
  • Adept in verbal communication.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Familiar with using hand tools.
  • Candidate must be willing to reside near or commute to a Joink office (Currently within Illinois: Taylorville, Hillsboro; Indiana: Terre Haute)
  • Candidates which have the following will have priority:
    • Relevant outside construction experience
    • Experience with relevant equipment (vacuum excavators, mini-excavators, horizontal directional drill)

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

  • 40 hours per week
  • Must participate in on-call rotation
  • Almost exclusively outside, year-round, in all weather conditions
  • Must be able to work overtime with and without notice
